Overview
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Associate Director – Mechanical to lead and oversee mechanical engineering projects within a multidisciplinary MEP consulting environment. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise, leadership skills, and business development experience to deliver high-quality, innovative mechanical system designs across commercial, institutional, and mission-critical facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership and oversight for mechanical engineering projects, ensuring design excellence, code compliance, and client satisfaction.
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of mechanical engineers and designers, fostering professional growth and maintaining high-quality standards.
Oversee project planning, resource allocation, budgets, and schedules for multiple concurrent projects.
Review and approve mechanical designs, calculations, specifications, and drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable codes (ASHRAE, IMC, local regulations).
Collaborate with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to define project scope, objectives, and design strategies.
Contribute to business development efforts, including proposals, client presentations, and technical guidance.
Promote innovation in mechanical system design, sustainability, and energy efficiency practices.
Support quality assurance/quality control processes and risk management initiatives.
Represent the mechanical engineering team in internal leadership meetings and client engagements.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s preferred.
Professional Engineer (PE) licensure required; multiple state registrations preferred.
10+ years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering, preferably within an MEP consulting firm.
Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams and complex projects.
Strong knowledge of mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and building automation systems.
Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and mechanical design software.
Exceptional communication, client management, and interpersonal skills.
Strong understanding of codes, standards, and best practices for commercial, institutional, and mission-critical projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with healthcare, data centers, higher education, or large commercial projects.
Familiarity with sustainable design certifications (LEED, WELL, or similar).
Experience supporting business development and client relationship management.
